My husband is transcribing 19th C correspondence at the American Antiquarian Society as a volunteer project. In his last batch of letters, he found two from Frederick Arthur Bridgman to one of the lenders who helped Bridgman go to France, where he studied in the atelier of Gérôme and spent time in Pont Aven. Although Bridgman became famous as an Orientalist, his early work includes paintings from his days in Brittany. This diligence is just like the one my characters ride to Pont Aven. What I love about it is the vivacity of the passengers. I didn’t know the picture when I was writing, but, believe me, I’m adding it to my collection of mental images for Where the Light Falls.
