Picturing a World

“Christmas Time Again”

After running out of Christmas cards, I went today to the Bookloft in Great Barrington, an excellent independent bookstore, where there was one box left with cards showing the the right wing of this triptych. Lovely to discover that the piece dates to 1907 (so close to my magic year of 1908 as makes no difference) and then to find the whole on line where it can be enlarged.

I did a little quick looking. It seems that the picture shows the Larsson family, though I haven’t confirmed it. The main thing today is not art history but the feelings of tradition, ease, and family love that the image suggests. Sometimes nostalgia, however wistful, is what gets us through dark hours. And sometimes studying a picture can suggest stories of our own. I hope one way or another this one brings you joy.
