Picturing a World

Putto checks Galileo

My intention has been to write a series of posts on the physical senses—sight, sound, taste, feel, smell—how we experience them, how they combine, and how writers can make better use of them in evoking the living world. But you know the story: it's been a busy week. Then this little guy popped up in a book I'm reading (The Sun the Church: Cathedrals as Solar Observatories(Harvard University Press, 1999); and, lo and behold, the 18th C book from which it is taken, Manfredi, Gnomone (1736) is available on line. It seems too delicious not to share. Don't you love the experimenter in the background almost as much as winged research assistant?
