Picturing a World

Joyeux Noël!

On their first Christmas Eve in Paris, Jeanette and Effie go to services at Saint-Germain-des-Prés. On Christmas Day in both 1878 and 1879, they attend services at The American Church in Paris on the rue de Berri, as they do most Sundays. It is an interdenominational Protestant church that was begun in 1814 and officially chartered in 1856 (it moved to its present location on Quai d’Orsay in 1931).

Harold and Adeline Vann prefer the more fashionable Episcopal church on the rue Bayard. In 1886, it moved to a new building on the Avenue d'Alma (now Avenue George V) and became The American Episcopal Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.

On Christmas Eve, 1879, Jeanette, Effie, Amy, and the Reade sisters attend services at the British Embassy Church, as Saint Michael's at 5, rue d'Aguesseau was then known. For a glimpse of its interior, click here.

Whatever your faith or observances, may the holiday season bring you joy! Joyeux Noël!
