What can I say? You can’t help loving it when two enthusiasms overlap so wackily. The novel Trilby by George Du Maurier was a bestseller in the 1890’s. Known to all art students in Paris—and evidently, Philadelphia!—it is a wonderful source for anyone looking into the 19th C Parisian art world.
As for John Sloan of the Ashcan School of American art, his drawings and paintings are giving me glimpses of Mattie’s New York in the early 20th C. I don’t think this will be one of them, but it’s fun to stick in the back of my mind.
