Picturing a World

Morning paper

In the first chapter of ANONYMITY, my unmarried heroine sits alone, reading the morning paper. Images like this one of William MacGregor Paxton’s woman reader, who seems to be in a boarding house bedroom, give me confidence that I’m fitting Mattie into a plausible pattern of behavior for her time. I also like that this woman is in a housedress or night dress (notice the slippers). I’m on the look-out these days for images of single working women or stories about them from around the turn of the 20th C to pick up details. If anybody can help with a link, please give it in a comment!
